KS2 Whittling

The children this week had the opportunity to use potato peelers to whittle sticks. The group were given a safety demonstration, explaining the safety rules and what PPE they would require. The group were all wearing gloves and all wore long trousers, which meant them having clothing to protect their legs. One or two of the children had done the activity before; therefore they were eager to tell the others all about it.

The children then had the opportunity to cut their own sticks, using a hand saw. Many of the children having at least two sticks. When I was happy that the children could use the potato peelers confidently and safely, I began introducing the pen knives. This was demonstrated to the children on a 1:1 basis. The guidelines for using them re-enforced with each child. The children had a really enjoyable and safe afternoon.
